Vegetable Smoothies: Blender Salad

blender recipesVegetable Smoothies Recipes: This is a blender salad that I learned how to make a couple of years ago and it has been a savior for me.  When I drink this, it takes my hunger away, reduces late afternoon cravings, and gives me tons of energy, that lasts a long time.

This blender salad was part of my weight loss program when I started learning about nutrition and fitness training and looking for ways to reduce cravings throughout the day.

It also helped me tremendously when I trained for my first LA Marathon in 2010.   I would drink this every single for months and months while training, and on the day of the marathon, I had my hubby waiting at the 13-mile marker with a cooler with 32 ounces for me, and I chugged half and then chugged on!

When I first was taught about “drinking” a salad I thought it was really strange. I never thought I would enjoy drinking blended vegetables. But I tried it and felt the difference immediately.

For me, since I really don’t like spending a lot of time in the kitchen, the first thing I noticed was that it’s so much easier making vegetable smoothies than making a regular salad!

But I know most people want to know:  How does it taste? I tell them it just tastes like a “mushed” up salad.  It’s pulpy and thick but it’s refreshing!

But Here Is Where It Really Hit Me…

It was after drinking a blender-full of this, I felt AMAZING! I felt a rejuvenating feeling. I felt I had much deeper levels of energy. It was not like I took a stimulant. It was like there was a far deeper well of energy available to me.

Mentally I felt it was so much easier to focus as well. I just felt calmer and more balanced. It was very surprising how something so simple could have such a dramatic effect.

And one of my most favorite things about drinking vegetable smoothies is that I don’t get “cravings” late in the day.  To me that is one of the most noticeable things because I used to cravings for sugar all the time, but when I have the blender salad, it keeps your blood sugars level throughout the day, so you don’t have those swings that make you want to grab three Joe-Joes and stuff them in you face!

Another Strange Side-Benefit…

We entertain A LOT, and I like to live life. I like to party and have fun. But sometimes I can really feel the alcohol the next morning. Yes… a hangover. I thought of drinking this to see if made a difference.

Well, what do you know! It really worked.  If I know I’m going to be drinking, I have a small blender salad beforehand (for insurance purposes), like an hour or two before, and I feel so so much better the next day.  And then, I also will have one the “morning after” to help rehydrate my body.

My nutritionist told me it makes a lot of sense because when you have a hangover, it is all the minerals you lose from drinking alcohol. This dehydrates you tremendously. And this prevents your nerves from communicating well. The result is foggy thinking and feeling stiff, dehydrated and lousy.

By drinking something like this, you replenish your cells with minerals. And minerals are what are needed for your metabolism to start getting your engines running again.

Who would have thought, right?
