5 Reasons You Should Never Buy or EAT Girl Scout Cookies
A few days ago, my doorbell rang.
I opened the door and standing there was an adorable little girl scout holding her little girl scout cookie brochure.
Her smiling, proud momma was standing behind her waiting for the little darling to deliver her “schpeel” to me.
“Would you like to buy some girl scout cookies?” She uttered.
I had to contain my irritation because after all I know it’s not the child’s fault that Girls Scouts USA has these little minions out peddling their UNHEALTHY, GMO-laden, preservative-masked cookies to the masses.
So I politely asked her, “Can I see the ingredient list sweetie… hmmm, I’m looking to see if they have trans fats, or GMOs… do you know?” Of course I already knew they did, but heck I was trying to have a teaching moment here.
Her mother smiled sweetly and said, “I believe we have gluten free?” I am certain she had no idea what I was looking for.
So I pointed to the ingredient list to show the little girl scout… “Here honey, see this, “partially hydrogenated oil,” and this “carrageenan,” these are really bad ingredients, and I would love to buy your cookies, but they are not made in a healthy way, so unfortunately I will have to pass… I’m so sorry…”
Her mother couldn’t get away from my house fast enough!
So today, I see all over the news about the “wine pairings with girl scout cookies…” Ugh… it just reminded me of that little girl having no idea what she is selling…
They’re baaaaack. It’s officially Girl Scout Cookie Season, and adorable young ladies in vests are making the rounds with their delectable wares. While our first motivation for scooping up boxes of Thin Mints and Tagalongs is to support the Scouts’ entrepreneurial endeavors, we can all agree that episodes of The Bachelor are way better when paired with a sleeve of Samoas…and a glass of vino. 5 Reasons You Should Never Buy or EAT Girl Scout Cookies
- They contain partially hydrogenated oils (also called trans fats) – Trans fats promote inflammation in the body and negatively impact cholesterol levels.
- They contain carrageenan – carrageenan causes inflammation. When you eat processed foods containing it, you actually ingest enough to cause inflammation in your bodies. All forms of carrageenan are capable of causing inflammation.
- They contain high fructose corn syrup – High Fructose corn syrup is just POISON to the body. Here is a really detailed explanation by Dr. Mark Hyman about the dangers of high fructose corn syrup.
- They contain modified corn starch – Basically a different name to hide ingredients that either contain Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) or form MSG during processing.
- They are made with GMO ingredients – Yes, they are made with GENETICALLY MODIFIED ingredients. This quote is directly from the Girl Scout site:
At the current time, there are genetically modified agricultural crops (GMOs) in Girl Scout Cookies. Our bakers determine whether to use GMOs in Girl Scout Cookies based on a range of market-related factors and depending on the specific cookie recipe.
It’s just really sad that the Girl Scouts are using these innocent kids to promote and push such an UNHEALTHY snack. If more people would tell the girls and the moms that they would buy the cookies if they were made with good ingredients, then perhaps something would change.
But unfortunately, most people are blinded by the samoas and the thin mints, because for heavens sake, I’m not gonna deny they taste good!
Ugh…. They’re just made with really crappy ingredients.
