What Are Superfoods?
If you’ve asked yourself recently, “what are superfoods?’ it’s probably because you’ve heard a lot of talk recently about “superfoods” so the term is on your diet radar.
Superfood chatter is all over talk shows, magazines, and all over the internet, but you may be wondering…What exactly are superfoods?
Well, superfoods are a special category of foods found in nature that are low in calorie but are packed with lots of nutrients for their weight. They are really high sources of antioxidants (which are the modern day fountain of youth) because they protect your body against free radicals that cause aging.
Foods are also characterized as super foods if they contain a large dose of essential nutrients that the body needs but we can’t make ourselves.
You may not even realize that you’ve probably been eating at least some of these foods, known as superfoods, without even realizing it. Most of them are foods that you already know and love.
Some good examples of superfoods:
Avocados = high in the good fat…. monounsaturated fat. Add avocado to sandwiches, wraps and salads.
Spinach = extremely rich in antioxidants. In addition to adding spinach to your salads, trying adding some to your green smoothies, it’s truly delicious.
Blueberries = high in antioxidants… this one’s a no-brainer, just eat them plain or in your smoothies.
Salmon = high in omega 3 – an essential fatty acid. Look for wild caught salmon. You can even use canned salmon in place of tuna in many recipes.
Dark Chocolate = very high in antioxidants and magnesium. Look for dark chocolate made with over 70% cacao. I eat dark chocolate every day!
Quinoa = whole grain that is super high in protein. Quinoa is light and kind of nutty. I use it as a side dish to fish, or eggs, or even in my salads.
Look to add superfoods at every meal. It’s easy to do, and it will help you get all the benefits of these amazing nutrient sources.
So now you have the answer to the question, what are superfoods answered, go ahead and start eating!
